Reversing Heart Disease

VitaTech is working to improve the outlook for hundreds of thousands of people with moderate to severe heart disease. Working with a pharmaceutical manufacturer, VitaTech is developing a drug that may actually remove cholesterol from the arteries of these patients, acting like synthetic HDL to send cholesterol back to the liver to be metabolized.

Heart disease: the number one killer of men and women

Heart disease is responsible for an estimated 931,000 deaths each year. The most popular treatment for moderate heart disease is the use of statins, cholesterol reducers that account for $26 billion annual sales worldwide.

While statins effectively stabilize arterial plaque, they do not remove or reduce advanced arterial blockage. This serious disease requires costly, invasive procedures such as bypass surgery.

Hope for sufferers of heart disease

Reversing the transport of cholesterol is an active process that requires energy. Although only in the very early stages of development, VitaTech is working on a technology that may provide that vital energy via direct delivery of ATP.

The new drug candidate is being investigated for the treatment of patients with moderate to severe untreated artherosclerosis or those with stents. The technology could also be used in conjunction with existing LDL-lowering therapies, providing new hope to people with heart disease.
