About Novera - Advisory Board

Lionel H. Opie, MD, DPhiL, DSc, FRCP, is currently Co-director of the Cape Heart Centre and Medical Research Council's Interuniversity Heart Research Group and Professor of Medicine, University of Cape Town Medical School, Cape Town, South Africa. In previous appointments Dr. Opie was Visiting Professor (1984-1998), Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Opie has published extensively in the areas of heart physiology and metabolism.

Barry R. Lentz, Ph.D. is a professor in Molecular and Cellular Biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Lentz is a world-leading authority on membrane fusion and has published over 100 manuscripts on the subject. Dr. Lentz has organized several workshops on membrane fusion for the Biophysical Society and has acted as a study section member for the National Institutes of Health.

William H. Stillwell, Ph.D. is a professor of Biology at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Dr. Stillwell is among the nation's most renowned membrane biophysicists. He is or has been funded by the NIH, USDA, NSF, ACS, and AHA. Dr. Stillwell has published over 100 manuscripts on membrane bilayers, with special emphasis placed on the role of unsaturated lipids on membrane bilayer properties.

Walter A. Shaw, Ph.D. is founder and president of Avanti Polar Lipids, the world's leading supplier of polar lipids. Dr. Shaw is an industry expert in the manufacture and use of lipids, as well as GMP production. Dr. Shaw and his team of highly qualified Ph.D. level scientists assist Novera in research and development endeavors.

Dr. Joseph Banis is a plastic surgeon at Norton Healthcare in Louisville, KY. Among his specialties is wound closure, with special emphasis on diabetic wounds. Dr. Banis has pioneered several techniques which are currently used in the clinical setting to close large wounds, including transplanting full-thickness plantar skin grafts. Dr. Banis will act as a liaison between Novera and the clinical setting for products developed by Novera.

John Crowe, Ph.D. is a professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis and Co-Director of the Center for Biostabilization. Dr. Crowe is inventor of the technology that allows lipid vesicles to be freeze dried and preserved. Dr. Crowe has an extensive membrane biophysics publication record and will assist Novera in stabilization of its products.
